There are indications in the score that "Les Troyens" occupied much of his attention while he was engaged upon it, and I fancy that that ambitiously planned, but star-crossed work, was also familiar to the librettist.
Very different is the double drama 'Les Troyens.' Here Berlioz drew his inspiration directly from Gluck, and the result is a work of large simplicity and austere grandeur, which it is not too much to hope will some day take its place in the world's repertory side by side with the masterpieces of Wagner.
However, it had no effect in preventing the failure of a worthless piece, staged at great expense by the management which had rejected Les Troyens.
But what dissimilarities there are in the styles of the two men! In their methods of treating the orchestra and the voices, in their musical architectonics, and in their conception of opera! In spite of the great worth of _Les Troyens_ and _Benvenuto Cellini_, Berlioz shone brightest in the concert hall; Wagner is primarily a man of the theater.
The _Procession des Rogations_ is often quoted from the _Mémoires_; and some of his poetical text, particularly that in _L'Enfance du Christ_ and in _Les Troyens_, is written in beautiful language and with a fine sense of rhythm.
