The typical genus _Tragulus_, which is Asiatic, contains the smallest representatives of the family, the animals having more of the general aspects and habits of some rodents, such as the agoutis, than of other ruminants.
The Tragulidæ are small deer-like animals, known as chevrotains or mouse-deer, abundant in India and the larger Malay islands and forming the genus Tragulus; while another genus, Hyomoschus, is confined to West Africa.
The steinbuck (_Oreotragus tragulus_): about twenty-one inches high, and three feet in length; horns four inches long, wrinkled at the base, slender and pointed; colour brownish-red, with belly white: female hornless, otherwise similar.
The third group is that represented by the chevrotains or mouse-deer, forming the family _Tragulidae_, with _Tragulus_ in south-eastern Asia and _Dorcatherium_ (or _Hyomoschus_) in equatorial Africa.
Deer are likewise numerous, and the peculiar group of chevrotains (_Tragulus_) is characteristic of the Indian region.
