They are the mouths of what are called _tracheæ_, or breathing tubes: and from them branch out a multitude of little canals, which, spreading in endless ramifications through every part of the body, convey to the whole mass of the blood, from all directions, the air which makes its way into them through the tracheal holes.
But in the ordinary adult insect the work of breathing is carried on by means of a system of tubes, known as 'tracheæ,' which run all over the body.
The tracheæ or tubes are everywhere bathed by the blood, which is thus constantly 'aerated,' or kept fresh.
Again, the air-tubes or tracheæ of insects are, like the trachea and bronchi of many Vertebrates, air-breathing organs.
They were interested in the physiology of the plant as a whole, how it lived and nourished itself, and they studied cells and sieve-tubes, wood fibres and tracheæ with a view rather to finding out their functions and their significance for the life of the plant than to discovering the minutiæ of their structure.
