Sentences with THINGHOOD (4)
For, even setting aside the fact, which is not universally true, that proper names indicate the sex of the owner, the mere act of giving a name to a thing implies at least that the thing exists, whether in fact or thought; it implies what we may call 'thinghood': so that every term must carry with it some small amount of intension.
Indeed to call them (with Berkeley), 'bundles of sensations' implies that the bundle is as important an element in thinghood as the sensations themselves.
The first is thinghood; existence indubitable, direct; in this way all things _are_ that are in 'consciousness' at all.
But immediately below we find the following sentence: “As time is only the form of intuition, and consequently of objects as appearances, what corresponds in them to sensation is the transcendental matter of all objects _as things in themselves_, thinghood [_Sachheit_], reality.”[1151] The teaching of the first sentence is phenomenalist; that of the other is subjectivist.
