The Hyperodapedon has been shown by Professor Huxley to be a terrestrial reptile having numerous palatal teeth, and closely allied to the living Sphenodon of New Zealand.
Since we are considering only those reptiles which an American boy may find living in their natural haunts in his home land, discussion of the Sphenodon is out of place in this article.
SPHENODON, sf[=e]'n[=o]-don, _n._ a genus of South American fossil sloths; a genus of extinct New Zealand lizards.--_adj._ SPH[=E]'NODONT.
The same foramen and an additional ectepicondylar foramen are found in the ancient reptilian type _Hatteria_ (_Sphenodon_); it occurs also in the Anomodont reptiles.
The sloths were more numerous, being represented by the extinct genera _Cælodon_, _Sphenodon_ and _Ochotherium_, the last of large size.
