The pyracantha _(Pyracantha coccinea_) is an evergreen shrub allied to cratægus, of which it is sometimes considered to be a species.
Privet is certainly the quickest growing shrub for that purpose, but, as it is so common, other shrubs, such as =pyrus japonica=, =arbutus=, =barberry=, and =pyracantha=, may be used.
Unless great care is taken it may be thought that the well-preserved bones of rhinoceros and elephant, and the shells of _Corbicula fluminalis_, come from the same alluvium that yields Neolithic flint-flakes, or that plants such as the South European _Cotoneaster Pyracantha_ flourished in Britain up to this recent date.
Pyracantha, honeysuckles, magnolias, and a creeper with great leaves, the name of which I never knew, the like of which I have never seen elsewhere, filled up other spaces and covered the bed-room windows with a marvellous amount of varied greenery.
But there is another side—that which catches the last rays of the setting sun—that which reveals itself to Lord Kemms’ visitors when they have passed the gates flanked by pyracantha, and taken the turn leading away towards Kemms’ Park.
