The body is long, flat, and composed of numerous segments or proglottids varying in shape, those toward the end of the body being much larger and longer than the anterior ones, and containing the fully developed sexual organs.
These structures, called _proglottids_, break off from time to time, thus allowing the developing eggs to escape.
The proglottids have no separate digestive systems, but the whole body surface, bathed in digested food, absorbs it and is thus enabled to grow rapidly.
The division of the body of the tapeworm into proglottids may represent a process of self-division, but the proglottids do not regenerate after separation.
How far regeneration may take place in the scolex, or young proglottids, is not known, but it is not improbable that some of the abnormal forms that have been described may be due to regeneration.
