Sentences with PREMAXILLA (5)
The occipital, the parietal, and frontal, the bones which surround the internal ear, the vomer, the premaxilla, and the quadrate bones, may be given as examples.
First comes the premaxilla (p.m.) (not p.m.1 or p.m.4), containing in the dog, the three incisors of either side.
Beneath the naris the maxilla extends as a broad tapering shelf, the ventral surface of which articulates with the premaxilla.
The premaxilla is a relatively weak bone in _Bombycilla_ and _Phainopepla_, stronger in _Ptilogonys_, and is notably heavy in _Phainoptila_ and _Dulus_, and in these latter two genera shows a sharply-ridged tomium.
The premaxilla is always unpaired, but each half has three long processes directed backwards; one fuses with the maxillary bone, another helps to form the anterior part of the palate, while the third, together with its fellow, forms the "culmen" and extends backwards to the frontals, or rather to the ethmoid which there crops up on the surface.
