One of the most significant new themes in the design of this skyscraper, whose premonitory character can only be fully appreciated in relation to the use of _pilotis_ in later modern architecture (see Chapter 22), is already to be found in a project of Sullivan’s of the previous year for the St Louis Trust & Savings Bank.
