From the thirteenth century onwards _pilei_, and the overtopping tufts, were of various colours according to the faculties which it was intended to distinguish.
Next to the Warden, on each side, are two figures in sleeveless copes, tippets and _pilei_, without hoods--doctors in theology or degrees.
