Sometimes artificial otoliths are produced by the insufflation of various powders which become agglutinated, and are veritable foreign bodies.
There are also some curious little stones called otoliths, lying in some parts of this fluid, and they, by their rolling to and fro, probably keep up the motion and prolong the sound.
The cavity of this membranous labyrinth is filled with a fluid, the endolymph; and within the utriculus, sacculus and lagena are masses of inorganic matter called the otoliths.
The sensory hair cells are disturbed by the movements of the otoliths in the endolymph, and thus an impulse is originated in the auditory nerve which results in a sensation more or less resembling our auditory sensation.
Again, although the antennæ of most insects are provided with numerous sensitive hairs, or setæ, we have no right to assume that these hairs are auditory; no "auditory rods," otoliths, etc., are to be found generally in antennæ, yet there are exceptional instances.
