The neck was bare, the amice being as yet unknown; instead of the stole was what was called the _orarium_, a sort of handkerchief resting on the shoulders, and falling down on each side.
ORARIUM, [=o]-r[=a]'ri-um, _n._ a linen neckcloth or handkerchief: a scarf attached to a bishop's staff.
The most ancient text wherein handkerchiefs are expressly mentioned, describes them as long cloths, called _oraria_, used and worn by senators “ad emungendum et exspuendum;” that use is said to have grown out of the convenience of the _orarium_, which is supposed to have been merely used at first to wave for applause in the public shows.
The others are all more or less fanciful; and the _orarium_ was certainly employed originally as a scarf.
Ambrose speaks of the face of the dead Lazarus being bound with an _orarium_; and Augustine uses the same word to indicate a bandage employed to tie up a wounded eye.
