The elements of color, _as_ color, may be reduced to three simple elements: First may be noted _hue_, as yellow or blue; second, _value_ (or _notan_) dark or light red; and third _intensity_ (or brightness to grayness), as vivid blue or dull blue.
The idea of _Notan,_ or the Light and Dark combination of Japanese art, differs from this in its intent, which is merely to set forth an agreeable interchange of light, dark and medium toned spaces.
The great value of this concept, however, should be recognized, and in formulating a scheme of light and shade for any picture its light and dark masses may be so arranged as to suggest much of the beauty which its flat translation by Notan would yield.
There are times also when the face of nature is so varied that the most fantastic schemes of _Notan_(15) are observed; a harbor filled with sails and sea-gulls, a crowd of people speckling the shore, the houses of a village dotted over a hillside.
Through the consideration of the qualities of color it will be found that value includes the material often given under "light and dark" or "notan." Referring again to the report of the Committee on Art Terminology,[13] "unity" is considered as a synonymous term for "harmony." Since it is possible for an arrangement to be unified and still be lacking in harmony, the latter term is used in the bulletin as the more important and inclusive one.
