Pero de Magalh„es de Gandavo, in his _Historia da Provincia Sancta Cruz_, published in 1576, uses the name 'hema' in writing of the rhea or nandu.
America are sloths, fitted to live only in its dense and boundless forests; ant-eaters and armadillos; monkeys with prehensile tails, in this and other respects differing from those of the Old World; the condor among the heights of the Andes, the nandu, rhea or three-toed ostrich, beautiful parrots and humming-birds.
The nandu is the larger, and dwells upon the wide plains of La Plata, whereas the petise is confined to the southern part of Patagonia.
The nandu resembles the African bird in form, and its dingy brown colour is not far from that of the hen ostrich.
The Order of Struthious Birds or Ostriches is represented in South America by the Nandu or Rhea, which is at once distinguished from the African Ostrich (_Struthio_) by having three toes instead of two, as also by many other important points of structure.
