Young cross-bills (Loxia) have at first straight beaks like those of other finches, and in their immature striated plumage they resemble the mature red-pole and female siskin, as well as the young of the goldfinch, greenfinch, and some other allied species.
From the thinner thorns the bell-shaped nests of the Loxia depend, waving in the breeze, and the wood resounds with the cries of bright-winged choristers.
The Rose-breasted Grosbeak (_Loxia rosea_) is said to be an excellent songster, passing the greater part of the night in singing, and continuing vocal in confinement.
Three grossbeaks (_loxia coccothraustes_) appeared some years ago in my fields, in the winter; one of which I shot.
After I had studied over the latter for a time, I remarked that every species almost that came from distant regions, such as South America, the coast of Guinea, etc., were thick-billed birds of the _loxia_ and _fringilla_ genera; and no _motacillae_, or _muscicapae_, were to be met with.
