The Latin _lebes_, a cauldron or kettle, is interpreted in the early glossaries by the Anglo-Saxon _hwer_, or _huer_, from which we derive the English word _ewer_; _hwær-boll_ or _hwær-cytel_ are interpreted in the Anglo-Saxon dictionaries as meaning a frying-pan, which is evidently not correct.
