For Psalms whose verses are arranged in groups of three, he wrote what he called "triple chants"--a form of composition since adopted by other Church writers; he also composed Canticles, Kyries and other music for the services of the Church.
Now even (to begin with), on account of this very universality (which in no way encroaches upon the inner significance, and the deeper application which each one lays into it, according to his own peculiar condition of mind and conscience), the text lends and adapts itself to the most infinite variety of musical treatment; and this is the reason why there are Kyries, Glorias, &c., so widely dissimilar in character, tone, and the rest.
For instance, one has but to compare the Kyries in Haydn's Masses in C major and D minor; also his Benedictuses.
The _Kyries_ are, many of them, very tuneful, and the whole setting of _Kyrie_ and _Creed_ does Locke great credit.
This usage took two forms, giving rise in the ritual service to the “farced Kyries” or Tropes, and in the freer song of the people producing a more regular kind of hymn, in which the _Kyrie eleison_ became at last a mere refrain at the end of each stanza.
