Some curious specimens of palm sugars were exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851, among others,--gomuti palm sugar (_Arenga saccharifera_) from Java; date palm sugar, from the Deccan; nipa sugar, from the stems of _Nipa fruticans_, and sugar from the fleshy flowers of _Bassia latifolia_,--an East Indian tree.
Etym: [Malayan.] Defn: A palm tree (Saguerus saccharifer) which furnishes sago, wine, and fibers for ropes; the gomuti palm.
The impression is taken with the fibrous bark of the gomuti palm; one or two sweeps across the block complete the impression, for only one side of the paper is printed.
Strong drinks, made from rice or the fruit of the tampui-tree, and also from the gomuti palm, flow freely; shrieks, yells, laughter, and shoutings, are heard in all directions, and the whole village seems given up to riot and dissipation.
