The house lizards belong to a peculiar family, the Geckos, and are found even in the best-kept chambers, most frequently on the walls and ceilings, to which they cling motionless by day, being active only at night.
Sometimes Geckos are found with forked tails; this results from the budding of a rudimentary tail at the side, from an injury done to the member.
The tracks also of fluviatile, lacustrine, and terrestrial tortoises (_Emys, Trionyx,_ etc.) were discovered, also those of crocodiles, iguanas, geckos, and great batrachians, and the footprints of a huge bird, apparently a wader, of the size of the gastornis, to be mentioned in the sequel.
Some of the geckos which cling motionless on the trunks of trees in the tropics, are of such curiously marbled colours as to match exactly with the bark they rest upon.
The latter is the most gaudily marked of the Geckos found in the United States and is likewise the most abundant.
