DODO (from the Portuguese _Dóudo_, a simpleton), a large bird formerly inhabiting the island of Mauritius, but now extinct--the _Didus ineptus_ of Linnaeus.
The most celebrated is the dodo of the Mauritius (_Didus ineptus_), but an allied genus, _Pezophaps_, inhabited Rodriguez, and of both of these almost perfect skeletons have been recovered.
The Dodo (_Didus ineptus_) a large, unwieldy, flightless bird, inhabited Mauritius down to the latter part of the 17th century; and an allied form, the Solitaire (_Pezophaps solitaria_), was found only in the island of Rodriguez, where it survived about a century later.
