Next to the extensive sections of the Stalk-eyed and Sessile-eyed Crustacea, but more nearly allied to the former than to the latter, comes the remarkable family of the _ Diastylidæ_ or _Cumacea._ The young, which Kröyer took out of the brood-pouch of the female, and which attained one-fourth of the length of their mother, resembled the adult animals almost in all parts.
Stuxberg masses of a species of cumacea, _Diastylis Rathkei_ Kr., of _Acanthostephia Malmgreni_ Goës, and _Liparis gelatinosus_ Pallas, but little else.
Other marine forms are Rhizopoda (_Rotalia_ and _Textillaria_), the sponge _Amorphina_, the _Amphicteis_ worm, the molluscs _Cardium edule_ and other _Cardidae_, and some Amphipods (_Cumacea_ and _Mysidae_,), but they are forms which either tolerate variations in salinity or are especially characteristic of brackish waters.
Among the Malacostraca some Schizopoda, the Cumacea, Tanaidacea, Isopoda and Amphipoda (sometimes grouped all together as Peracarida) have a marsupium or brood-pouch formed by overlapping plates attached to the bases of some of the thoracic legs.
Nearest to them come the Schizopoda, a primitive group from which two lines of descent can be traced, the one leading from the Mysidacea (_Mysidae_ + _Lophogastridae_) to the Cumacea and the sessile-eyed groups Isopoda and Amphipoda, the other from the Euphausiacea (_Euphausiidae_) to the Decapoda.
