The element also occurs in small quantities in many other minerals, especially in crocoisite (PbCrO_{4}), in which mineral it was first discovered.
Lead chromate, PbCrO4, occurs native as the mineral crocoisite, and may be obtained as an amorphous pale yellow solid by precipitating a soluble lead salt by an alkaline chromate.
Beudant in 1832, from the Greek [Greek: krokos], saffron, in allusion to its colour, a name first altered to crocoisite and afterwards to crocoite.
