More than a century and a half after the death of Mariana, this venerable ballad, of which one imperfect copy on parchment, four hundred years old, had been preserved at Bivar, was for the first time printed.
His real name was Rodrigo Diaz de Bivar, but he is usually spoken of as "The Cid." The Goths, after the death of Alaric, had taken Spain away from the Romans.
