Sentences with BICHIR (4)
Etym: [Native name.] (Zoöl.) Defn: A remarkable ganoid fish (Polypterus bichir) found in the Nile and other African rivers.
Note: They were numerous, and some of them of large size, in early geological periods; but they are represented by comparatively few living species, most of which inhabit fresh waters, as the bowfin, gar pike, bichir, Ceratodus, paddle fish, and sturgeon.
Among these may be specially mentioned the Bichir of the tropical African rivers, the Gar-Pike of North America, the Sturgeons, the Lung-Fishes (Dipnoi) of South America, Africa, and Australia, the Chimæras, and finally the Sharks and Rays.
The waters furnished a variety of fishes; amongst these few were more frequently seen than a sort of harness fish (_Polypterus bichir_), of which a representation will be given in a later chapter.
