GEOLOGIC FEATURES The most important mineral of silver is the sulphide, argentite or "silver glance." Other minerals which yield a minor percentage of the total silver produced are the silver-antimony sulphides, pyrargyrite or "ruby silver," stephanite or "black silver," and polybasite; the silver-arsenic sulphides, proustite or "light ruby silver" and pearcite; and the silver antimonide, dyscrasite.
Farther down it may be reprecipitated as native silver, argentite, and the sulpho-salts, by organic matter or by various sulphides.
Acanthite is a supposed dimorphous form, crystallizing in the orthorhombic system, but it is probable that the crystals are really distorted crystals of argentite.
Since argentite (Ag2S) is isomorphous with galena, it is probable that the silver isomorphously replaces lead, but it is to be noted that native silver has been detected as an enclosure in galena.
Although the argentite and native silver commonly found there are mixed with galena, a lead mineral, or with chalcocite, a copper mineral, they also occur separately.
