Sentences with VENDACE (5)
The salmonoids as a family are freshwater fish, and by far the greater number of kinds--trout, char, whitefish, grayling, pollan, vendace, gwyniad, and so forth--are inhabitants of lakes, steams, ponds, and rivers, only a very small number having taken permanently or temporarily to a marine residence.
The very remarkable fish called the _Vendace_ is to be found but in one place in the three kingdoms,--the Castle Loch of Lochmaben, a parish to the south of Dumfriesshire in Scotland.
The gentlemen of the county have formed a {302} _Vendace Club_, which meets at Lochmaben annually on the 25th and 26th of July, when they dine off the fish.
Besides its other attractions, Lochmaben presents a peculiar fact in natural history, for in its waters are found--in addition to other fish--the vendace, a species of fish found in no other loch.
This rare fish takes no lure, and thus can only be netted, and the fishing for it in the Castle Loch is limited to one day in the year, in July, when the vendace club meet, fish, and dine.
