This quirk was originated by a CMU hacker who disliked the term `superuser', and was propagated through an ex-CMU hacker at Tektronix.
Robin Hood and Friar Tuck were designed to run as `ghost jobs' (daemons, in UNIX terminology); they would use the existing loophole to subvert system security, install the necessary patches, and then keep an eye on one another's statuses in order to keep the system operator (in effect, the superuser) from aborting them.
This quirk was originated by a CMU hacker who found the terms `root' and `superuser' unimaginative, and thought `avatar' might better impress people with the responsibility they were accepting.
The superuser account (with user name `root') that ignores permission bits, user number 0 on a Unix system.
Another reason is that you might be tricked into running a _Trojan horse_ program—that is, a program that takes advantage of your superuser powers to compromise the security of your system behind your back.
