Proceeding to the degree of _doctor juris_ in 1838, young Gneist immediately established himself as a _Privatdozent_ in the faculty of law.
His eldest son, HEINRICH AUGUST HAHN (1821-1861), after studying theology at Breslau and Berlin, became successively _Privatdozent_ at Breslau (1845), professor _ad interim_ (1846) at Königsberg on the death of Heinrich Hävernick, professor extraordinarius (1851) and professor ordinarius (1860) at Greifswald.
Returning to Heidelberg he became _Privatdozent_ in theology in 1829, and in 1831 published his _Begriff der Kritik am Alten Testamente praktisch erörtert_, a study of Old Testament criticism in which he explained the critical principles of the grammatico-historical school, and his _Des Propheten Jonas Orakel über Moab_, an exposition of the 15th and 16th chapters of the book of Isaiah attributed by him to the prophet Jonah mentioned in 2 Kings xiv.
After spending a year as parish priest at Zellingen, near his native city, he went, in 1850, at his bishop's command, to the university of Munich, where he took his degree of doctor of theology the same year, becoming in 1851 _Privatdozent_, and in 1855 professor of ecclesiastical law and history.
