The connective-tissue framework of a nerve-trunk consists of the _perineurium_, or general sheath, which surrounds all the bundles; the _epineurium_, surrounding individual groups of bundles; and the _endoneurium_, a delicate connective tissue separating the individual nerve fibres.
The tumours, which vary greatly in size and number--as many as a thousand have been counted in one case--are enclosed in a capsule derived from the perineurium.
The nerve fibres there figured are bound together by endoneurium into small ropes, the nerves, encased in perineurium.
Note: An ordinary nerve is made up of several bundles of nerve fibers, each bundle inclosed in a special sheath (the perineurium) and all bound together in a connective tissue sheath and framework (the epineurium) containing blood vessels and lymphatics.
The disease is caused by an acid-fast bacillus, which has not surely been cultivated or inoculated into animals with pathogenic result, and which is found in extraordinary abundance in the granulomatous subepithelial tissues of nodular leprosy and in scanty numbers or not at all in the perineurium and endoneurium of the ulnar, facial or perineal nerves.
