The more noted species are known by different names--as the Tatou Poyou, the Giant Tatou, the Peba, the Pichiciago, the Pichey, the Hairy Tatou, the Mataco, the Apara, and such like designations.
The peba (_Tatusia novemcincta_) represents a group with a large number of movable bands in the armour; while the apar (_Tolypeutes tricinctus_) and the other members of the same genus are remarkable for their power of rolling themselves up into balls.
The house in which I slept when I passed through the village before, was now empty, but I was allowed to occupy it, and as I could not get a cart to convey me to Peba before the following evening, I had to remain here a longer time than I intended.
Peba I found to be nearly, if not quite, as poor a place as the Ilha de San Pedro, and not a single article of provision could be purchased there.
