The Tertiary plant-remains, in the great majority of instances, are impressions of leaves, the conclusions to be drawn from which are highly precarious; until the whole subject of Angiospermous palaeobotany has been reinvestigated, it would be rash to venture on any statements as to the descent of the families of Dicotyledons or Monocotyledons.
This was followed by several papers chiefly bearing upon the relation between extinct and existing forms--a line of research which culminated in the publication of the _Histoire des végétaux fossiles_, which has earned for him the title of "father of palaeobotany." This great work was heralded by a small but most important "Prodrome" (contributed to the _Grand Dictionnaire d'Hist.
His activity was by no means confined to palaeobotany, but extended into all branches of botany, more particularly anatomy and phanerogamic taxonomy.
The subject of palaeontological botany (see PALAEOBOTANY) has been advanced by the researches of both botanists and geologists.
The archaeology of zoological species constitutes the sphere of palaeontology (q.v.), while that of botanical species is dealt with as palaeobotany (q.v.); and every different science thus has its archaeological side.
