From the Latin nasus are derived the French nez and the English nose; and nesse, a promontory, as projecting like a nose.
But as if from the consonants ns taken from nasus, and transposed that they may the better correspond, sn denote nasus; and thence are derived many words that relate to the nose, as snout, sneeze, snore, snort,snear, snicker, snot, snivel, snite, snuff, snuffle, snaffle, snarl, snudge.
The Latin name _Nasturtium_ was given to the Watercress because of its volatile pungency when bruised and smelt; from _nasus_, a nose, and _tortus_, turned away, it being so to say, "a herb that wriths or twists the nose." For the same reason it is called _Nasitord_ in France.
But nasus here signifies a silver pipe or quill to suck up the blood of Christ at the communion, such as the pope sometimes uses.
The ancient Ordo Romanus calls that _pugillar_ which is here called nasus, because it sucks up as a nose draws up air.
