Kieserite (MgSO_{4}.H_{2}O) occurs in quantity at Stassfurt, and is used in the manufacture of Epsom salts.
Above this last layer there is a layer of about 90 feet, containing kieserite (magnesium sulphate) mixed with potassium and magnesium chlorides; and above this again is a layer (90 feet) of carnallite, which furnishes the chief source of the potash salts used for manurial purposes.
The press-runnings, which are never quite clear, are collected in a clarifying tank, where they are treated with lime and kieserite, whereby gypsum is formed, and the mass is put through a filter-press, which retains the solids and leaves the effluent clear.
