Certain genera, such as carp, perch, pike, and loach (_Cyprinus, Perca, Esox,_ and _Cobitis_), as also _Lebias,_ being peculiar to fresh-water.
The Pickerel, _Esox reticulatus_, the swiftest, wariest, and most ravenous of fishes, which Josselyn calls the Fresh-Water or River Wolf, is very common in the shallow and weedy lagoons along the sides of the stream.
The intestines of the _Mahaseer_ are on the other hand only two and a quarter times the length of the body! Of the fish obtained, two are Perilamps, here called _Rohi_, 5 or 6 Cyprinides, 4 or 5 Siluri, 2 Ophiocephali, 1 Esox.

The fish is, in a word, the great pike (Esox nobilior), and it is to all intents and purposes possessed of the general characteristics of the Esocidae family.
