The highest of all, which occupies a central position, is the Pointe des Ecrins; the second in height, the Meije,(14) is on the north; and the Mont Pelvoux, which gives its name to the entire block, stands almost detached by itself on the outside.
Their works, however, contained numerous errors in regard to the identification of the peaks, and, amongst others, they referred the supremacy to the Mont Pelvoux, the highest point of which they termed the Pointe des Arcines, or des Ecrins.
