The late Colonel Cundill, in his "Dictionary of Explosives," gives a list of about 125 kinds of dynamites.
Morton Liebschutz, in a paper in the _Moniteur Scientifique_ for January 1893, very rightly observes that the variety of dynamites manufactured is very great, all of them having a special composition which, good or bad, is sometimes of so complicated a nature that the determination of their elements is difficult.
They are mostly distinguished by special trade names, and are mainly of two classes--those containing ammonium nitrate and nitrobenzene or nitronaphthalene, and those containing nitroglycerin and nitrocellulose, which are essentially weak dynamites.
Dynamites and flameless explosives are made in a variety of strengths, and are packed in waterproofed cartridges of different sizes.
The cap is often placed in the cartridge preceding the last one charged, but it is better to insert it last, in a piece of cartridge called a "primer." Though the dynamites are not exploded by sparks, they should nevertheless always be handled carefully.
