With regard to the word Δοῦλος, _Doulos_, used in the Greek Testament to denote either a slave or a servant, there can be no doubt of the application of the term to both these relations of ancient society.
The question is not, then, the meaning of the term _Doulos_, or its application to slavery at the period of the promulgation of the Christian religion; but, whether, because slavery was not then reprobated by the teachers of Christianity, it was not therefore a very great evil.
The resulting idea is not "He made Himself void, and then took," but "He made Himself void _by taking_." The "Exinanition" was, in fact, just this--_the taking the form of the_ _doulos_: neither less nor more.
The first word used for service is _diakanos_, which means a minister to others in any usual way or work: but the word _doulos_ means a bond slave, and the Lord here plainly teaches us that the highest service is that of a bond slave.
The _doulos_ spirit is the spirit of self-renunciation and glad submission to proper authority, service utterly disinterested, yielding our own preferences and interests unreservedly for the glory of the Master and the sake of our brethren.
