The subject of that story line is the best- known example of contemporary attempts to control the digital world, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act or DMCA.
They are to be found in Section 1201 of the Copyright Act, an ungainly and lumpily written portion of the law that was inserted in 1998 as part of the complex set of amendments collectively referred to as the DMCA.
