The following minerals produce slags only with soda: stilpnosiderite, plombgomme, serpentine, silicate of manganese (from Piedmont), mica from granite, pimelite, pinite, blue dichroite, sphenc, karpholite, pyrochlore, tungstate of lime, green soda tourmaline, lazulite, heavy spar, gypsum.
DICHROITE (d[=i]´kro-[=i]t), or IOLITE, a mineral, a silicate of magnesium, iron, and aluminium, which readily undergoes modifications and passes into hydrous silicate.
Thus a crystal of the mineral iolite (called also dichroite because of its strong pleochroism) will be seen to be dark blue, pale blue or pale yellow according to which of three perpendicular directions it is viewed.
Cordier, who discovered its remarkable dichroism, and suggested for it the name dichroite, still sometimes used.
