The latter is found dwelling at a great elevation, in fact, on the tops of the highest mountains of that island; whereas the Danta, or American tapir, is altogether confined to the low hot plains.
Two species of bear and the "coatí" (_Nasua_) represent the plantigrades and inhabit the mountain slopes, and, of Pachydermata, the peccary (_Dicotyles_) and "danta" or tapir (_Tapirus_) have a wide distribution throughout the lowland and lower plateau forests.
Thus the Sanskrit word _danta_, "tooth," has been borrowed by Tamil in the form _tandam_, and the Telugu _anna_, "elder brother," _tammulu_, "younger brother," become when compounded _annadammulu_, "elder and younger brothers."
