While the trees thrive and grow fruitful with this fertilizer, the curculio, or plum-weevil, does not appear to find it at all to its taste.
Three very splendid insects of the outer ranges of Sikkim never occurred in the interior: these are a gigantic Curculio (_Calandra_) a wood-borer; a species of Goliath-beetle, _Cheirotonus Macleaii,_ and a smaller species of the same rare family, _Trigonophorus nepalensis_; of these the former is very scarce, the latter extremely abundant, flying about at evenings; both are flower-feeders, eating honey and pollen.
For the curculio, within a few days after the flowers are off, take a large sheet of some cheap material to use as a catcher.
Plums do ripen in England, of course; the greengages that come there after they have ceased to come from France are as good as our own when the curculio does not get them; but the efflorescence of the peaches and almonds is purely gratuitous; they never fruit in the London air unless against some exceptionally sun-warmed wall, and even then I fancy the chances are against them.
After all the experiments made and repellents used for the plum curculio, the jarring method is found the most efficient and reliable, if properly performed.
