There are three isomers of cresol, viz., _o_-, _m_-, and _p_-cresol, and it was naturally of interest to investigate whether one or the other of the isomers exerted any particular influence on the properties of the final product.
Relatively to their reactions, all the products strongly precipitate gelatine, whereas only the condensation products of phenol, cresol, and xylenol derivatives give a characteristic coloration with iron salts.
Similarly, condensation of different samples of crude cresol containing varying quantities of _o_-, _m_-, and _p_-cresol did not yield end-products sufficiently different to justify describing them in detail.
When cresylic acid (or cresol, C_{6}H_{4}(CH_{3})OH.) is acted upon by nitric acid it produces a series of nitro compounds very similar to those formed by nitric acids on phenol, such as sodium di-nitro-cresylate, known in the arts as victoria yellow.
Staveley has patented a process by which the distillation is continued after the water has gone off, and by condensing in a fractionating column of special construction, he is able to remove all the paraffin oil, a considerable quantity of cresol, a small quantity of phenol, and about 10 per cent.
