From the contemporary journals we learn that, at the concert mentioned by Chopin, Schmitt afforded the public of Vienna an opportunity of hearing a number of his own compositions--which were by no means short drawing-room pieces, but a symphony, overture, concerto, concertino, &c.--and that he concluded his concert with an improvisation.
One knows that the kind of _Concerti Grossi_, which consists chiefly in a dialogue between a group of solo instrumentalists (the _Concertino_) and the full body of instruments (_Concerto Grosso_), to which is added the cembalo,[407] was, if not invented, at least carried to its perfection and rendered classical by Corelli.[408] The works of Corelli, aided by the efforts of his followers, had become widely known in Europe.
After seven bars of _Largo_, in which the _Concertino_ alternates dreamily with the _Tutti_, two bars _adagio_, languorously drawn out, cause the reverie to glide into a sort of ecstasy, [Illustration: _Adagio_] then a _larghetto andante e piano_ breathes out a tender and melancholy song.
The Overture to _The Triumph of Time_ of 1708 is a brilliant Concerto, where the _Concertino_ and the _Grosso_ converse in a most entertaining and graceful fashion.
One of the most interesting features in the programme was an enormous work of Kalkbrenner's for six pianofortes, played by the composer and Chopin in _concertino_, together with Hiller, Osborne, Stamaty and Sowinski as accompanists: a disposition of forces which plainly indicates that the newcomer was already recognised as a leader by some of the best executants in Paris.
