These generators were fitted with a spinning switch or commutator (one of the neatest gadgets Edison ever invented) to make the current flow in unidirectional pulses (D.C.) In 1876 all electrical equipment was powered by direct current.
After Edison had decided this question, Upton made drawings and tables from which the real armatures were wound and connected to the commutator.
Edison also improved the armature by dividing it and the commutator into a far greater number of sections than up to that time had been the practice.
Carbon for commutator brushes has been superseded by graphite in some cases, the latter material being found much more advantageous, electrically.
