Schunck made an investigation many years ago into the character of the impurities, and found them to consist of the following substances:-- =Cotton Wax.=--This substance bears a close resemblance to carnauba wax.
Jequirity seeds were found to have a stronger decomposing action on lanoline and carnauba wax than the castor seed, but only caused decomposition of castor oil after the initial acidity was first neutralised with alkali.
Intervening members of this series, such as caprylic acid, C_{7}H_{15}·COOH, and lauric acid, C_{11}H_{23}·COOH, are also found in smaller quantities in cocoanut and palm nut oils, in butter fat, and in spermaceti; while higher members of the series, as arachidic acid, C_{19}H_{39}·COOH, and lignoceric acid, C_{23}H_{47}·COOH, are found in peanut oil; and cerotic acid, C_{25}H_{51}·COOH, and melissic acid, C_{29}H_{59}·COOH, in beeswax and carnauba wax.
Another highly useful palm is the _carnauba_ or _carnahuba_ (_Copernicia cerifera_) which supplies fruit, medullary meal, food for cattle, boards and timber, fibre, wax and medicine.
The methods have not been developed with special reference to waxes (beeswax, carnauba wax, wool wax, etc.) although some of them may be found applicable to these substances.
