Such materials should not be used in preparing hydrogen, since the arsenic present combines with a portion of the hydrogen to form a very poisonous gas known as arsine.
When any compound containing arsenic is brought into the presence of nascent hydrogen, arsine (AsH_{3}), corresponding to phosphine and ammonia, is formed.
Under these conditions a small porcelain dish crowded down into the flame is blackened by a spot of metallic arsenic, for the arsine is decomposed by the heat of the flame, and the arsenic, cooled below its kindling temperature by the cold porcelain, deposits upon it as a black spot.
The gas stibine (SbH_{3}) is formed under conditions which are very similar to those which produce arsine, and it closely resembles the latter compound, though it is still less stable.
Arsenic _trihydride_ (arsine or arseniuretted hydrogen), AsH3, is formed by decomposing zinc arsenide with dilute sulphuric acid; by the action of nascent hydrogen on arsenious compounds, and by the electrolysis of solutions of arsenious and arsenic acids; it is also a product of the action of organic matter on many arsenic compounds.
