The real thing is more nearly visible in Swift's macaronic lines about Molly--'Mollis abuti, Hasan acuti,' etc.--another vein of fun which has been exceedingly well worked out by successive writers.
The book ends with the sentence: "Ex collegio Montis--Acuti 20 Decembris 1576"; then follow two pages in Hebrew, with the Latin translation over it, headed "Decem Præcepta decalogi Exod." Over this is the design containing the light A and the dark A, and the squirrel and rabbits.
SCOPULO.--Not two instruments, _a whirlwind and a rock_, but one single instrument, _a whirling rock_; scopulo turbineo; in modo turbinis se circumagente; as if Virgil had said, Solo affixit illum correptum et transverberatum scopulo acuto in eum maxima vi rotato: or, more briefly, Turbine scopuli acuti corripuit et infixit.
They consist entirely of Latin words; but, by allowing for false spelling, and running the words into each other, the sentences make good sense in English:— Mollis abuti, (Moll is a beauty, Has an acuti, Has an acute eye, No lasso finis, No lass so fine is, Molli divinis.
The white and tender flesh of the agouti (_Dasyprocta Acuti_, Desm.), when fat and well dressed, is by no means unpalatable food, but very delicate and digestible.
